What HX Mayakoba 2026 Taught Us About Building Better Businesses

Real Insights From Construction Industry Leaders

Earlier this year, our team attended HX Mayakoba 2026, hosted by Highspire in Cancún, Mexico. While the setting offered a welcome break from wintery job sites back home in North Carolina, the real value of the experience came from meaningful conversations with builders, consultants, and industry leaders from across the country.

HX Mayakoba is designed to create space for honest dialogue around leadership, systems, and growth in the construction industry. For us, it provided the opportunity to step away from day to day operations and reflect on how we can continue to serve our clients and community better here in Alamance County and the greater Triad area.

What stood out most was how consistent many of the lessons were, regardless of market, company size, or specialty. Below are some of the most impactful insights we are bringing back into our work.

From Left to Right: Jensen Roll & Mtende Roll [Roll Construction], Brett Bernard [PROCOR], Darsh Sidhu-Jawant [HighSpire], Lauren Mingus [Longshore Custom Homes], Nakesha & Taylor Morgan [Verity Construction]

The Value of Mentorship and Outside Perspective in Construction

One of the most influential conversations we had was with Darsh, our coach through Highspire. She spoke about how essential it is for construction business owners to have an objective, data driven perspective guiding decision making.

When you are deeply involved in running a construction company, it can be difficult to step back and see where real challenges exist. Darsh explained that Highspire helps builders ground decisions in clean, validated data rather than assumptions or emotion. This approach often leads to difficult but necessary conversations around leadership, accountability, and long term strategy.

She also emphasized the importance of community. Being surrounded by other contractors who understand the pressures of the industry helps remove the isolation many owners feel. Having a trusted, experienced voice offering perspective can be a turning point for both personal and professional growth.

Mastering the Client-Contractor Relationship

We had an insightful conversation with JP from Red Oven Builds in Texas, who shared that one of the biggest mistakes general contractors often make is not educating their clients enough throughout the construction process.

JP prioritizes walking clients through each phase of the project, from pre construction planning to final walkthrough. In his experience, taking the time to explain decisions, timelines, and expectations leads to smoother projects and stronger client relationships. Education builds trust, reduces misunderstandings, and allows clients to feel confident throughout the process.

This insight strongly aligns with how we approach our work at Roll Construction. Clear communication and transparency are foundational to how we build homes and manage projects in Alamance County.

The Cost of Poor Planning and Misaligned Expectations

Another valuable conversation was with Morgan Knox of Knox Out AI, who works closely with construction teams from an operational and systems perspective. She shared that one of the most expensive mistakes she sees clients make is rushing into projects without thorough pre construction planning.

When design documents, scopes of work, and decisions are not fully developed upfront, projects are more likely to experience change orders, delays, and increased costs. Morgan emphasized that investing time early in the process saves both time and money later.

She also highlighted how misaligned expectations between clients and builders can quickly escalate into larger issues. Clear documentation and shared understanding are critical to keeping projects on track.

Trusting the Process Leads to Better Outcomes

We also spoke with Lauren Mingus of Longshore Custom Homes, who shared a perspective she frequently sees play out with clients. Many homeowners struggle to trust the construction process, even after it has been clearly explained.

Lauren explained that when clients interrupt or resist a well established process, it often leads to unnecessary stress, delays, and higher costs. Builders rely on proven systems to deliver quality results, and trusting those systems is key to a successful project.

Her insight reinforced the importance of education, patience, and mutual trust between builder and client. When all parties are aligned, the experience is better for everyone involved.

Leadership, Accountability, and Team Structure

From a development and operations standpoint, Barrett Johnston of Cadence shared insights into how accountability impacts projects at every level. He explained that when expectations, scope, and responsibilities are not clearly defined early, momentum slows and costs rise.

Barrett emphasized that alignment between builders, developers, and partners is essential to long term success. Clear leadership and accountability help teams make confident decisions and keep projects moving forward efficiently.

Several other professionals echoed similar challenges around team structure and leadership. Avoiding hard conversations or keeping the wrong people in the wrong roles often leads to operational and financial strain. Growth requires clarity, accountability, and a willingness to address issues early.

Shared Lessons Across the Construction Industry

Across all these conversations, a few common themes continued to surface. Education matters. Planning matters. Trust matters. And leadership requires intentional decision-making, even when those decisions are uncomfortable.

Whether working in Texas, North Carolina, or beyond, many professionals shared the same belief that strong systems and strong relationships are what sustain a successful construction business over time.

Bringing These Insights Back to Alamance County

What stood out most about HX Mayakoba 2026 was how closely these lessons align with our values at Roll Construction. We believe in educating our clients, planning thoroughly, and building strong teams that support both the project and the people behind it.

As a custom home builder and general contractor rooted in Alamance County, these insights reinforce our commitment to serving our local community with integrity, transparency, and care. We returned home energized and encouraged, with a renewed focus on continually improving how we build and how we lead.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from so many experienced professionals and look forward to applying these lessons in the work we do every day across Burlington and the surrounding Triad area.
